Last fall I decided to take an online business course, and honestly, I was a little nervous at first. I had never taken an online class during a regular semester, and I wasn’t sure if I would be able to stay on top of everything while juggling other classes and responsibilities. But I liked the idea of being able to log in whenever I had time, so I decided to give it a try.
One of my favorite parts of the class was the discussion boards. I loved reading other students’ thoughts and then really taking my time to craft my own responses. It felt less stressful than having to speak up in a live classroom, and I found myself thinking more deeply about the topics than I might have in person. I also enjoyed the multimedia lessons. The videos, interactive quizzes, and real-life case studies made the material way more engaging than just reading a textbook, and I actually looked forward to doing some of the assignments.
That said, there were definitely parts I did not enjoy. Waiting for the instructor to respond to my questions could be frustrating, and sometimes I felt a little disconnected from the energy of a classroom. I missed being able to quickly ask someone next to me for clarification, or just having that instant back-and-forth when something didn’t make sense.
If I could retake the class, I would, but I would definitely try to be more proactive. I would ask questions earlier, participate more consistently, and not leave assignments until the last minute. I realized that my strengths as an online student are being independent and reflective, but my weaknesses are struggling with motivation and asking for help when I need it.
Overall, the class taught me more than just business concepts. It taught me how I learn best, how to push myself to stay disciplined, and even how to enjoy the process of learning on my own. I still like the idea of online classes, but I know now that I need to stay organized and take responsibility for my learning if I want to succeed.
